The Ultimate Fall Skincare Routine: 7 Easy Steps to Glowing Skin as the Weather Cools Down

Can we talk about that moment every September when you step outside and suddenly your skin feels… different? One day I’m still glowy and dewy from summer sunscreen and pool days, and the next I’m catching my reflection in the school pickup line looking like a dry, flaky version of myself. Sound familiar? If your skin does a total personality change the second the temperature drops, you are so not alone.

As a mom who’s juggling school mornings, hair appointments for two, and approximately eleven other things before 8am, I don’t have time for a 12-step Korean skincare routine (as gorgeous as those routines are). What I do have time for is a simple, effective fall skincare routine that actually works — one I can do in the five minutes of quiet I get before my daughter wakes up asking for a French braid.

So today I’m sharing the exact 7-step fall skincare routine I use to keep my skin glowing, hydrated, and happy all autumn long, plus the products that make it actually doable. Let’s get into it!

Why Your Skin Changes in the Fall

Before we jump into the routine, it helps to know why your skin suddenly feels tighter, drier, or duller once fall hits. A few culprits:

  • Lower humidity — cooler air holds less moisture, which pulls hydration right out of your skin
  • Indoor heat — turning the heater on dries out the air in your home (and your skin along with it)
  • Sun damage catching up — all that summer sun exposure can show up as dullness and dark spots once the season shifts
  • Hot showers — so tempting when it’s chilly out, but hot water strips your skin’s natural oils

The good news? A few small routine swaps can fix all of this. Here’s exactly what I do.

Step 1: Switch to a Gentler, Hydrating Cleanser

Summer cleansers are often built to fight oil and sweat, but that same formula can leave fall skin feeling stripped and tight. I switch to a cream or gel cleanser with hyaluronic acid that cleans without stripping. My skin actually feels softer after washing instead of squeaky-clean-but-tight.

Pro tip: Wash with lukewarm water, not hot. I know a hot shower feels amazing on a chilly morning, but your face (and your daughter’s) will thank you for keeping it lukewarm.

Step 2: Add (or Bring Back) a Vitamin C Serum

If summer left you with any sun spots, uneven tone, or dullness, a vitamin C serum is your best friend this season. I apply mine every morning after cleansing and before moisturizer — it brightens, evens out tone, and gives that lit-from-within glow that’s basically impossible to fake with makeup alone.

How to layer it correctly:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Apply vitamin C serum (a few drops, pat don’t rub)
  3. Wait 60 seconds for it to absorb
  4. Follow with moisturizer

Step 3: Layer in a Richer Moisturizer

This is the step people skip and shouldn’t. Your lightweight summer gel moisturizer just isn’t going to cut it once the air turns dry. Switch to a richer cream that locks in moisture and repairs your skin barrier. I look for ceramides and hyaluronic acid on the label — they’re basically skin-barrier superheroes.

Step 4: Never, Ever Skip SPF (Yes, Even in Fall)

I know, I know — it’s tempting to think sunscreen is a “summer thing.” It’s not! UV rays don’t take the fall off, and skipping SPF is one of the fastest ways to undo all your other skincare efforts. I use a moisturizer with built-in SPF 30 for my morning routine so it’s truly a one-and-done step. No extra time needed, no excuses.

Step 5: Give Your Lips Some Love Too

Nobody talks about lip skincare enough, but chapped lips are basically inevitable once the weather turns. I keep a nourishing overnight lip mask on my nightstand and slather it on before bed. I wake up with soft lips instead of the flaky, painful chapped lips I used to deal with every October.

Step 6: Run a Humidifier While You Sleep

This one is a total game changer that I didn’t discover until a couple years ago. Once the heat kicks on in our house, the air gets so dry it affects everyone’s skin — mine, my daughter’s, even our hair gets staticky and brittle. A humidifier in the bedroom adds moisture back into the air overnight, and I wake up with noticeably softer, less tight-feeling skin. It’s basically an overnight facial you don’t have to think about.

Step 7: Exfoliate — But Gently, and Less Often

Fall skin needs exfoliation to slough off dead, dry skin cells, but you don’t want to overdo it and strip your barrier further. I dial back to once or twice a week (down from my summer routine of every few days) and use a gentle chemical exfoliant rather than a harsh physical scrub.

My Simple Fall Skincare Routine, Recap

  • Morning: Gentle cleanser → Vitamin C serum → SPF moisturizer
  • Night: Gentle cleanser → Rich moisturizer → Lip mask
  • 1-2x per week: Gentle exfoliation
  • Every night: Humidifier running in the bedroom

That’s it! No 12 steps, no $300 shopping list, just consistent, simple habits that make a real difference.

Final Thoughts

Fall is one of my favorite seasons — cozy sweaters, pumpkin everything, and matching braided hairstyles with my daughter for all the back-to-school photos. But it does require a little skincare TLC to keep your glow going once summer humidity disappears. Try swapping in even two or three of these steps and I promise you’ll notice a difference within a week or two.
