5 Easy Red, White & Blue Desserts for the 4th of July: Patriotic Treats to Bake with Your Family
Nothing Says Summer Like Red, White & Blue Treats! πΊπΈ
The 4th of July is right around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you know that the best part of any celebration is the dessert table. There’s something so magical about a spread full of patriotic treats β the red, white, and blue colors, the sprinkles, the frosting, and the smiles on everyone’s faces when they see what you’ve made.
Every year, my daughter and I make it a tradition to spend the day before the 4th baking together. We crank up the music, tie on our matching aprons, and create the most festive treats we can dream up. It’s become one of our favorite mother-daughter traditions, and honestly? The memories we make covered in flour and frosting are worth more than any fireworks show.
Whether you’re hosting a backyard BBQ, heading to a potluck, or just want to surprise your family with something special, these 5 easy patriotic desserts are perfect for bakers of all skill levels. Let’s get into it!
1. Classic Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing π
You can’t have the 4th of July without star-shaped sugar cookies! These are the ultimate crowd-pleaser, and they’re so fun to decorate with kids.
Sugar Cookie Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1Β½ teaspoons baking powder
- ΒΌ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Β½ teaspoon almond extract (optional but amazing)
Easy Royal Icing
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons meringue powder
- 5-6 tablespoons warm water
- Red and blue gel food coloring
Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract and mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F. Roll dough to about ΒΌ inch thick on a floured surface.
- Use star, flag, and firework-shaped cookie cutters to cut shapes and place on a lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes β they should be just barely golden on the edges. Let cool completely before decorating.
- Mix your royal icing ingredients, divide into three bowls, and color one red, one blue, and leave one white. Pipe, flood, and add sprinkles!
Pro tip: Let your little ones handle the sprinkle station β they’ll have a blast, and honestly, the messier cookies always taste the best. π
2. Red, White & Blue Poke Cake π
This is one of the easiest and most impressive desserts you can bring to a 4th of July party. It looks like you spent hours on it, but it comes together in about 30 minutes (plus chilling time). It’s basically magic.
What You’ll Need
- 1 box white cake mix (plus ingredients on the box)
- 1 box (3 oz) strawberry Jell-O
- 1 box (3 oz) berry blue Jell-O
- 2 cups boiling water (1 cup per Jell-O flavor)
- 1 cup cold water (Β½ cup per flavor)
- 8 oz whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
- Fresh strawberries and blueberries for topping
Instructions
- Bake the white cake according to the box directions in a 9×13 pan. Let cool for 15 minutes.
- Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake β about 1 inch apart.
- Prepare each Jell-O separately: dissolve in 1 cup boiling water, then stir in Β½ cup cold water.
- Carefully pour the red Jell-O over one half of the cake and the blue over the other half.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours (overnight is even better!).
- Spread whipped topping evenly over the cake. Arrange strawberries and blueberries on top in a flag pattern or fun design.
My daughter always insists on arranging the berries, and I have to say β she does a better job than I do every time! This is seriously one of those desserts that gets oohs and aahs at every cookout.
3. Patriotic Cupcakes with Swirl Frosting π§
If you want something portable and adorable, these cupcakes are the way to go. The tri-color frosting swirl looks SO professional, but it’s actually really simple once you know the trick.
What You’ll Need
- Your favorite vanilla cupcake recipe or box mix (makes 24)
- 1 batch American buttercream (1 cup butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, 2 tbsp heavy cream, 1 tsp vanilla)
- Red and blue gel food coloring
- Patriotic cupcake liners
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles
The Tri-Color Frosting Trick
- Make your buttercream and divide into three equal portions.
- Color one portion red and one blue. Leave the third white.
- Lay out a large piece of plastic wrap. Spread the three colors side by side in stripes.
- Roll the plastic wrap into a log, twist the ends, and snip one end.
- Place the log inside a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (like a Wilton 1M).
- Pipe a swirl onto each cupcake β the colors will spiral together beautifully!
- Top with patriotic sprinkles and a mini flag pick for extra flair.
These cupcakes are the star of the show at every gathering. Pack them in patriotic cupcake liners and they’re party-ready!
4. Strawberry Shortcake Flag Trifle π
This is my go-to dessert when I need to feed a crowd without breaking a sweat. It’s basically layers of deliciousness, and you can prep it the night before.
What You’ll Need
- 1 store-bought angel food cake (or pound cake), cubed
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant vanilla pudding
- 3 cups cold milk
- 8 oz whipped topping
Instructions
- Whisk pudding mix with cold milk until thickened (about 2 minutes). Fold in the whipped topping.
- In a large trifle bowl or glass dish, layer: cake cubes β pudding mixture β strawberries β cake cubes β pudding mixture β blueberries.
- Repeat layers until you reach the top.
- Finish with a layer of whipped topping and arrange strawberries and blueberries in a flag pattern on top.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
The glass trifle bowl is key here β you want everyone to see those gorgeous layers! My daughter loves helping with the assembly because it’s like building a delicious edible tower.
5. Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats π₯
These are SO fun, incredibly easy, and the kids go absolutely wild for them. They’re basically classic Rice Krispie treats shaped like firecrackers β festive and delicious!
What You’ll Need
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 bag (10 oz) marshmallows
- Red and blue gel food coloring
- White chocolate melting wafers
- Patriotic sprinkles
- Paper straws or lollipop sticks (for the “fuse”)
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large pot over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
- Divide the melted marshmallow mixture in half. Color one half red and the other blue.
- Stir 3 cups of Rice Krispies into each colored mixture.
- Press each color into a greased 8×8 pan and let cool slightly.
- Cut into rectangles and stack one red and one blue piece together to form a firecracker shape.
- Dip the bottom in melted white chocolate and roll in patriotic sprinkles.
- Insert a paper straw or lollipop stick in the top as the “fuse.”
These are a total hit at parties, and they’re one of the few treats that my daughter can make almost entirely by herself (with supervision at the stove, of course!). They also make adorable party favors wrapped in clear cellophane bags.
