My Budget Phone Filming Setup for Moms: Everything You Need to Film Great YouTube Videos Under $100

Let me tell you a secret: some of my favorite videos were filmed on nothing more than my phone, a wobbly stack of books, and a very patient daughter holding a flashlight. If you’ve been dreaming about starting a channel but the price tags on cameras make you gulp, I have good news. You can build a genuinely good phone filming setup for well under $100.

I get messages all the time asking, “Betsy, what do I need to start filming?” The honest answer is less than you think. Today I’m sharing my budget phone filming setup for moms: the simple pieces that make your videos look steadier, brighter, and more polished, without a studio or a second mortgage.

If you’re ready for the bigger gear later, I shared my full camera setup in My Real YouTube Filming Setup, and if you’re brand new, start with my beginner’s guide to starting a YouTube channel as a busy mom. But for now? Grab your phone. You already own the most important piece.

Why Your Phone Is Plenty Good Enough

Modern smartphones shoot sharp 4K video, have great stabilization, and are always in your pocket. The difference between a “meh” phone video and a “wow, who filmed this?” video is almost never the camera itself. It comes down to four things:

  • Stability: a tripod beats hand-holding every time.
  • Light: soft, even light makes any camera look expensive.
  • Sound: viewers forgive okay video, but they click away from bad audio.
  • Framing: a clean background and a camera at eye level.

Get those four right and your phone does the rest.

Step 1: Get a Tripod You’ll Actually Use

The single best upgrade is getting the phone out of your hand. A tripod frees both hands for hair tutorials, cookie decorating, or outfit try-ons, and it ends the shaky-footage problem for good.

For tutorials where I’m working at a counter or in front of a mirror, I like a tall extendable tripod that also works as a selfie stick. For overhead baking shots or tight spaces, a mini flexible tripod can wrap around a shelf, a chair, or a cabinet handle. Having both in the bag means you’re covered for almost anything.

Quick tripod tips

  • Set the phone at eye level for talking shots. Lower angles are not flattering for anyone.
  • Film in vertical for Shorts and horizontal for regular videos, and decide before you start.
  • Tape a small mark on the floor so you always stand in the same spot.

Step 2: Lighting That Flatters (Without Looking Like an Interrogation)

Natural light from a window is free and gorgeous. Stand facing the window, never with it behind you, and you’ll glow. But when it’s cloudy, or you film after the kids are in bed, a ring light is a lifesaver.

Ring lights create a soft, even glow and put a lovely circle of light in your eyes. Choose one with adjustable brightness and color temperature so you can match your room, and keep it just above eye level, a little off to one side if you wear glasses.

My lighting rules:

  1. Face the light source, whether that’s a window or a ring light.
  2. Turn off overhead lights that cast yellow shadows.
  3. Keep the brightness at a medium level. Too bright washes you out.
  4. Do a 10-second test clip and check it on a bigger screen.

Step 3: Don’t Skip the Sound

Here’s what I wish someone had told me on day one: audio matters more than video. A clip with crisp sound and slightly soft picture feels professional. A gorgeous clip with echoey, distant audio feels like a mistake.

The phone’s built-in mic is fine if you’re close to it, but a small clip-on wireless microphone keeps your voice clear even when you step back to show your whole outfit or your finished braids. Many budget kits bundle one with the tripod, which is a wonderful way to save money.

No mic yet? Film in a small, soft room with rugs, curtains, and pillows. Bare kitchens with tile floors echo terribly. A bedroom with a made bed sounds surprisingly great.

Step 4: A Remote Is the Tiny Gadget That Changes Everything

If you’ve ever sprinted back and forth to tap “record” and then spent the first ten seconds of every clip staring at your phone, a Bluetooth shutter remote is for you. Press once to start, press once to stop. It’s small enough to hide in your hand, and it makes solo filming so much smoother. My daughter also loves being the “official clicker” when we film together.

Step 5: Set Up Your Space in 10 Minutes

You don’t need a dedicated studio. Here’s my quick reset routine for any corner of the house:

  1. Clear the background. Remove laundry, clutter, and anything with a busy pattern.
  2. Add one pop of personality: a plant, a cute lamp, or a framed print.
  3. Place the tripod about 3 to 5 feet from where you’ll stand or sit.
  4. Position your light in front of you, slightly above eye level.
  5. Clean your lens! A quick wipe with a soft cloth is the cheapest upgrade there is.
  6. Do a test clip to check sound, light, and framing.

Phone Settings Worth Changing

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb so a text notification doesn’t interrupt your best take.
  • Lock exposure and focus by long-pressing the screen so the video doesn’t pulse in and out.
  • Use the rear camera whenever possible. It’s sharper than the selfie camera, and a small mirror or a monitor can help you frame yourself.
  • Shoot at 1080p or 4K and make sure you have plenty of storage space before you start.
  • Charge up or plug in. Video drains battery fast, especially with a ring light running.

Filming With Your Daughter

Some of my favorite moments happen when my daughter jumps into the frame. Kids are natural on camera when you don’t make it a big deal. Let her pick the hair clips, hold the product, or press the remote. Keep sessions short (15 to 20 minutes), bring snacks, and be okay with giggles in the final cut. Those are the clips viewers love most.

🏆 Our Top Picks

Here are the budget-friendly pieces I’d put in my cart if I were starting over today. Prices were what I saw on Amazon’s best-seller listings at the time of writing, and they do change.

1. Vlogging Kit with Auto Face Tracking Tripod, Light and Wireless Mics (about $39.99)

This all-in-one kit is the closest thing to a “just add phone” starter setup. It pairs a 63-inch tripod with a light, wireless microphones, and a remote, so you get stability, light, and sound in one box. A wonderful pick if you want to be filming by the weekend.

2. 71-Inch Selfie Stick Tripod Vlogging Kit with Fill Light, Wireless Mic and Remote (about $29.99)

If budget is tight, this one is hard to beat. The tall adjustable aluminum tripod doubles as a selfie stick, and it includes a fill light, mic, and remote. It’s a great fit for hair tutorials where you need a wide shot and a steady frame.

3. 10-Inch Selfie Ring Light with 73-Inch Tripod Stand and Phone Holder (about $29.99)

A classic ring light with adjustable brightness and multiple color modes, plus a tall stand and phone holder. This is my pick for makeup and skincare videos where flattering, even light is everything.

4. Portable Mini Flexible Tripod with Cold Shoe Phone Mount (about $18.99)

The bendy legs wrap around almost anything, which is perfect for overhead baking shots, travel, and tight counters. It’s also small enough to toss in a purse, and it’s a nice low-cost second tripod.

5. Wireless Bluetooth Camera Remote Control with Zoom (about $16.99)

This tiny clicker starts and stops recording from across the room. It works with iPhone and Android, and it turns solo filming from stressful into smooth.

Common Beginner Mistakes (I’ve Made Them All)

  • Filming with a window behind you. You turn into a silhouette.
  • Forgetting to check audio. Always play back a few seconds before you film the whole thing.
  • Buying everything at once. Start with a tripod and light, then add a mic or remote as you grow.
  • Waiting for “perfect.” Your fifth video will always be better than your first, but only if you make the first one.

Final Thoughts

A great video doesn’t come from the most expensive gear. It comes from showing up with something helpful, fun, or beautiful to share. With a phone, a tripod, a soft light, and decent sound, you’ve got everything you need to start. Upgrade later, once you know what you love.
